Offline and installing the app
Putting Squaresmile Tools on your home screen, what keeps working without a connection, and why the first visit after an update may look stale.
Squaresmile Tools is a Progressive Web App. You can install it on a phone or tablet from the browser — no app store — and tools you have opened before keep loading when the venue Wi-Fi drops.
Installing on a phone
iPhone and iPad (Safari)
- Open squaresmile.de in Safari.
- Tap the Share button — the square with an up-pointing arrow.
- Tap Add to Home Screen, then Add.
Android (Chrome)
- Open squaresmile.de in Chrome.
- Tap the menu (⋮, top right).
- Tap Install app (or Add to Home screen), then Install.
The icon launches full screen, without browser chrome. The same steps are on the platform's install page and under Install on your phone on the Account page.
What works offline
- Any tool you have opened before reopens and runs. Your work is on the device, so editing, importing and exporting carry on.
- The installed app always opens. Without a connection it shows a launcher listing the tools that are available offline; online it goes straight to the dashboard.
- Show Clock keeps its own offline cache and keeps time from the device clock — see Working offline.
What needs a connection
- The dashboard, the Account page and licence activation.
- Account sync — edits are kept on the device and pushed when you are back online.
- Creating a share link, and opening a live one.
- Anything a tool fetches live, such as Show Clock's weather and sunset.
Open the tools you will need before you walk into a venue with bad Wi-Fi. A tool that has never been opened on that device is not cached.
After an update
The app caches its own files so it loads instantly. Right after we ship an update, the first visit on a device can still run the previous version of a tool — the layout looks off, or a feature you read about is missing.
- Reload the page once.
- If it still looks stale, fully close the tab or the installed app and open it again.
Your data is safe throughout: it is stored on the device and, if you are signed in, on your account.
Thanks for the feedback.
